About Me

Picture
I am honored to serve as a current member of the D45 Board of Education, to which I was appointed in March of 2022 to finish an unexpired term. I'm a proud graduate of District 45 and Willowbrook High School, and I am thankful for how both districts prepared me for my studies at Illinois State University (B.M.E., 2000; M.M.E., 2003) and the University of Illinois (Ph.D., 2010), and for nearly 25 years as an educator. After living, working, and studying in Central Illinois for several years, my family moved back to the D45 community in 2011, and now have three children enrolled in the district. I am seeking election on April 4 so I can serve the students of our community by continuing my work on the board.
As a university faculty member in a teacher education program, I am passionate about working to ensure that all kids are safe, learn, and grow. I celebrate high-quality, accessible public education, and support our district's outstanding teachers, staff, and administrators in their daily work with our kids.

In my current role on the board, I serve as a representative on the D45 Education Foundation, the Equity Advisory Team, and the District PTA Council. My interests include DEI policy, mental health, safety, leadership, learning communities, and supporting teachers in "preparing students to successfully navigate a dynamic world" (from the D45 vision statement).

Please read more in the "Position Statements" tab about the guiding principles that I use in my personal, community, and professional work. I hope that you'll consider supporting me with your vote on April 4, and invite you to connect on Facebook and Instagram. If you would like a yard sign, please request one here.

Parent
I'm the proud parent of three District 45 students. We chose to live in the D45 community when we moved back upstate because we love the area and wanted our kids to go to school in this district. Now I want to return the investment that our schools made in me, so I can do my part to ensure that all D45 students have access to the knowledge, skills, and opportunities that can open doors and provide a firm foundation when they graduate.

Teacher
I've dedicated my adult life to education. For nearly 25 years, I have taught students at the middle school, high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels. During that time, I have taught courses in music theory, history, psychology, music ensembles, K12 teaching methods, principles and procedures in music education, conducting, music literature, keyboard skills, music appreciation for educators, administration and supervision of music instruction, and technology. I have also served as university supervisor for preclinical courses and student teachers.

Neighbor
I value community. I have been involved in scouting (as an Eagle Scout and volunteer leader), have held two church choir director positions, and was an active volunteer with the service-learning program during my time as a high school teacher. Most recently, I have served as PTA treasurer at North Elementary School, as treasurer of the D45 music boosters, coached park district soccer, serve as leader of a community band, as state research chair for the Illinois Music Education Association, and as a martial arts student and mentor in Lombard, IL (earned black belt in October 2021).
